Mustafa Suleyman joins Microsoft

Remember Mustafa Suleyman, the brainiac behind DeepMind (the AI lab that Google scooped up)? Well, in 2019, he made a big move to Microsoft! He joined their brand new AI team, called Microsoft AI, to be the boss.

And Suleyman didn’t come alone – he brought some amazing teammates from his previous company, Inflection AI, including the super-smart Karen Simonyan who became Microsoft AI’s head scientist.

Mustafa Suleyman, aged 39, was one of the co-founders of DeepMind alongside Demis Hassabis and Shane Legg back in 2010. Google acquired the company for £400m in 2014 and it eventually evolved into Google DeepMind in 2023 playing a central role in Google’s AI endeavors.

Satya Nadella, the CEO of Microsoft, shared in a blog post that the renowned British AI pioneer, who departed from Google in 2022, is set to lead a new entity named Microsoft AI, which will concentrate on the company’s consumer products and research. A number of employees from Sulyeman’s Inflection AI startup will also be transitioning to this division.
